DeepBlue (DBL, Italy)

The organisation:
Deep Blue is a research and consultancy company created by a group of senior researchers from major Italian Universities and Research Centres. It has a multidisciplinary team of specialists in Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology and Safety. The area of activity of the company is the analysis and evaluation of interactive systems, with particular focus on the interaction, integration and allocation of functions between the human, procedural and equipment components.

Most of the company's work is for European organisations, on a number of specific topics including: (1) evaluation and validation of air traffic concepts and systems; (2) evaluation of dependability of interactive systems; (3) safety analysis of air traffic concepts and systems.

Relevant skills/experience/technologies: Deep Blue is actively involved in the SESAR Programme as ENAV consultant for Human Factors, Safety and Validation aspects. Deep Blue is participating in many Validation Activities funded by Eurocontrol (e.g. TMA2010+ and Fasti South) for the introduction of innovative tools and procedures in the ATM domain. Moreover, Deep Blue is participating to the SWIM-SUIT Project User Group.

Moreover, Deep Blue is or has been involved in several international collaborative projects in the ICT domain that are relevant for the Aniketos Project, including:

  • System Engineering for Security and Dependability (Serenity) where the role of Deep Blue was the evaluation and tentative application of Security patterns in the dependability domain, with specific reference to safety critical systems.
  • Security Engineering for lifelong Evolvable Systems (SecureChange), where Deep Blue is responsible of the definition of Case Studies and of the Validation of the SecureChange techniques, tools, and processes supporting the design for evolution, testing, verification and re-configuration of evolving software.

Role in the project:Deep Blue will contribute to the project as ATM domain expert by contributing to the collection of requirements for the Aniketos solutions (T1.2, T1.3, T1.4), providing feedback and recommendations during the whole tool design and development life-cycle (T6.1, T6.2, T6.4) and validating Aniketos final results in real operational settings (the whole WP7). Deep Blue will participate in Dissemination Activities in the Transport and ATM community (T11.4).

Interest in project results: Deep Blue is really interested in exploiting Aniketos results in its research and consultancy work in the ATM Domain and particularly in the SESAR Programme, since Security and Trust issues are becoming more and more relevant in the future ATM vision.

Key personnel

Valentino Meduri is a former Air Traffic Controller and manager, working in the ATM domain for about 20 years for ENAV, the Italian ATM Service Provider. After this Operational and Managerial experience, he worked as ATM Domain Expert from 2003 to 2005 for Selex S.I. and from 2005 for Deep Blue. He worked to various innovative European Project financed by E.C. and Eurocontrol, in the Transport  and  ICT Domains such as MFF (2000-2005), SESAR Definition Phase (2007-2008), Blue Med (2008), Serenity (2006-2008), SecureChange (2009-2012).

Simone Pozzi works in Deep Blue as Human Factors and Safety expert since 2001. He achieved a PhD (2006), with specialisation in Human-Computer Interaction. His PhD thesis dealt with human-centred technological innovation in ATM, with the validation of technology involving sharp-end operators (i.e. air traffic controllers). He has participated in more than 20 applied projects in the areas of Human Factors, Safety and Reliability funded by the European Commission, by the European Organisation for Safety in Air Traffic Control (EUROCONTROL), by the Italian Air Traffic Control service provider (ENAV).
